Under the Silver Lake

Sam is a bored young man living in a Los Angeles apartment complex, spending his nights spying on neighbours and drifting through encounters with an aspiring actress. One evening he meets Sarah, a mysterious woman swimming in the building's pool, and she promises they will see each other again. By the next morning she has vanished. Sam sets out to find her, and his search pulls him through the city's hidden corners and into a tangle of scandals and conspiracies far stranger than he expected.

David Robert Mitchell wrote and directed the film, following his 2015 horror feature It Follows. Andrew Garfield plays Sam, with Riley Keough as Sarah, and Topher Grace, Callie Hernandez, Don McManus and Jeremy Bobb among the supporting cast; seventy performers are credited in all. The production, mounted for about 9 million dollars, is a large-scale effort by independent standards, with a crew of seventy-two.

Released in August 2018, the film is a crime mystery running 139 minutes. Its worldwide box office of roughly 2 million dollars stands well below its budget. On IMDb it holds 6.5 out of 10 from more than 49,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.3 from about 1,700. A critics' rating of 6.1 from 157 reviews places it close to the audience scores, suggesting a similarly divided response across viewers and reviewers. Mitchell returned to feature directing in 2026 with The End of Oak Street.
