Film Stars Don't Die in Liverpool follows the relationship between Peter Turner, a young British actor, and Gloria Grahame, the American actress whose Hollywood career had faded by the late 1970s. What begins as a romance between the two in Liverpool develops into something more lasting, and when Gloria falls ill while she is in England, Peter brings her into his family home, where his relatives help look after her. The film is based on Turner's memoir of the same name, and Matt Greenhalgh wrote the screenplay with Turner. Annette Bening plays Gloria and Jamie Bell plays Peter, with Julie Walters, Stephen Graham, Kenneth Cranham and Leanne Best among the supporting cast.

Paul McGuigan directed the film, which was released in 2017 and runs 105 minutes. It was his first feature after Victor Frankenstein and the eighth film he had directed, following a run that includes The Acid House, Gangster No. 1, Wicker Park, The Reckoning, Lucky Number Slevin and Push. Barbara Broccoli and Colin Vaines produced it for Lionsgate, EON Productions and IM Global on a budget of about 10 million dollars.

The film took roughly 4 million dollars worldwide, well short of its production cost, and its ratings sit in the middle range: 6.7 out of 10 on IMDb from around 11,000 votes and 6.3 out of 10 on TMDB from far fewer votes. A critics' rating of 6.7 out of 10 from 164 reviews places it in line with the IMDb figure.
