Happy End

Happy End follows a wealthy family in Calais whose comfortable life is unsettled by a series of crises. The household is led by Georges Laurent, its elderly patriarch, and includes his daughter Anne, who runs the family business, and his son Thomas, who is hiding a double life. Into this setting comes Georges' granddaughter Éve, a troubled girl whose mother lies in a coma after a drug overdose. Across the family, old tensions and private unhappiness surface, while the refugee camps only a few miles away go almost unnoticed.

Michael Haneke directed and wrote the film, his fourteenth feature and his first since Amour. The cast is led by Isabelle Huppert, Jean-Louis Trintignant, Mathieu Kassovitz, Fantine Harduin, Franz Rogowski and Laura Verlinden, with twenty-nine credited performers in all. This German, Austrian and French co-production had a budget of about fourteen million dollars and returned roughly three million worldwide.

On IMDb the film holds 6.6 out of 10 from around eighteen thousand votes, and on TMDB 6.2 from a much smaller number. A critics' rating of 7 out of 10, drawn from 154 reviews, puts professional response somewhat above the audience scores.
