Alpha

Set in Europe during the last Ice Age, roughly 20,000 years ago, Alpha follows Keda, a young man who comes of age among hunters of his tribe. During his first hunt with the group's elite hunters, a bison hunt goes wrong, and Keda is separated from his people and left for dead. Injured and alone, he must survive in a harsh and unforgiving wilderness. His situation changes when he meets a wolf abandoned by its pack. The two begin as wary strangers and gradually come to depend on each other, travelling together through dangerous country as winter approaches, with Keda trying to find his way back to his tribe.

Albert Hughes directed the film, the fifth feature in his directing career after Menace II Society, Dead Presidents, From Hell and The Book of Eli. Dan Wiedenhaupt wrote the screenplay, and Hughes produced with Andrew Rona. Kodi Smit-McPhee plays Keda, with Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Marcin Kowalczyk, Jens Hultén, Natassia Malthe and Spencer Bogaert among the cast.

Released in August 2018, the film runs 97 minutes and was made for about 51 million dollars, going on to take roughly 100 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.6 out of 10 from around 71,000 votes, and on TMDB it also sits at 6.6 out of 10, from about 2,800 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6.6 out of 10 from 133 reviews, leaving critical and audience responses closely aligned.
