Marlo Moreau is raising three children in a New York suburb, and the arrival of a third baby has left her exhausted. Her daughter Sarah is easygoing, her son Jonah needs extra attention, and the newborn demands nearly everything else. When her brother Craig offers to pay for a night nanny as a gift, Marlo resists at first. Once the sleepless nights pile up, she accepts, and Tully begins arriving late each evening to take over the baby's care and let Marlo rest. A bond forms between the two women, though Tully is as challenging as she is thoughtful, and the arrangement gradually affects Marlo in ways she did not expect.
Jason Reitman directed the film, the seventh in his feature career, from a screenplay by Diablo Cody. Charlize Theron stars as Marlo, with Mackenzie Davis as Tully, Ron Livingston as Marlo's husband Drew and Mark Duplass as Craig. Theron also produced alongside A.J. Dix and Reitman.
Released in 2018 and running 95 minutes, the comedy-drama earned 16 million dollars worldwide. Critics rated it considerably higher than audiences did: on review aggregation it holds 7.6/10 from 288 reviews, while on TMDB it sits at 6.8/10 from 1,561 votes.
