Gifted

Gifted centers on Frank Adler, a single man living in a small Florida coastal town who is raising his niece Mary after the death of her mother. Mary is a child prodigy with exceptional mathematical ability, and Frank is determined that she should have an ordinary childhood rather than be pushed into a hothouse of testing and achievement. That plan runs into opposition when his mother Evelyn learns of the girl's talent and decides she has her own designs for Mary's future, setting up a custody fight between grandmother and uncle.

Marc Webb directed the film from a screenplay by Tom Flynn. It sits between his two Amazing Spider-Man pictures and a pair of later features, the second of which also appeared in 2017. Chris Evans plays Frank, with Mckenna Grace as Mary, Lindsay Duncan as Evelyn, Jenny Slate as Mary's teacher Bonnie, Octavia Spencer as the family's landlady and friend Roberta, and Glenn Plummer as Greg Cullen. Roughly thirty cast members and about a hundred crew were credited.

Made for about seven million dollars, Gifted took in some forty-three million worldwide, a strong return on its production cost. On IMDb it holds 7.6 out of 10 from around 158,000 votes, while on TMDB it averages 8 out of 10 from a much smaller base of just over six thousand. The critics' rating stands at 6.4 out of 10 from 181 reviews, noticeably below the audience scores.
