Short description
Barents Sea, August 12th, 2000. During a Russian naval exercise, and after suffering a serious accident, the K-141 Kursk submarine sinks with 118 crew members on board. While the few sailors who are still alive barely manage to survive, their families push for accurate information and a British officer struggles to obtain from the Russian government a permit to attempt a rescue before it is late. But general incompetence are against all their efforts.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Robert Moore's novel "A Time to Die: The Untold Story of the Kursk Tragedy" (2002).
  • Filming was initially scheduled to begin in September 2016, but it had to be postponed because the Russian Ministry of Defense did not grant permission for filming in Russia, which would have lasted about a month. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Ministry of Defense initially promised the filmmakers cooperation, but later doubted the expediency of allowing foreigners access to classified facilities. Filming had to be moved to France and Belgium. It began on April 26, 2017, at the French Navy base in Toulon.
  • The film features footage of a Metallica concert in 1991 at the Tushino airfield in Moscow at the "Monsters of Rock" festival.
