Short description
Macarena Granada is a famous Hollywood actress who previously lived through the era of Nazi Germany. During the 1950s, she returns to Spain under the rule of Francisco Franco to film a major American production about Queen Isabella I of Castile. This comedy serves as a sequel to the 1998 film The Girl of Your Dreams.
The movie was written and directed by Fernando Trueba, appearing after his 2010 work Chico & Rita and before They Shot the Piano Player in 2023. It stars Penélope Cruz, who also served as a producer alongside Mercedes Gamero and Mikel Lejarza. The supporting cast includes Antonio Resines, Neus Asensi, Cary Elwes, Mandy Patinkin, and Javier Cámara.
Produced in Spain with a budget of 12 million USD, the film earned 1 million USD at the worldwide box office. Audience reception was mixed, with a rating of 5.3/10 on IMDb from 2,400 votes and 5.2/10 on TMDB from 101 votes. Film critics provided a similar assessment, giving the movie a rating of 5/10 based on 27 reviews.

- Miguel Ángel Egéa and Carlos López, the screenwriters of the film "Girl of Your Dreams" (1998), in which the characters from "The Queen of Spain" appeared, sued director Fernando Trueba and his wife and producer Cristina Huete for breach of contract and the use of characters they had created (the sequel features 8 characters from the first film). Two other screenwriters of "Girl of Your Dreams" were Rafael Azcona and David Trueba. Azcona passed away in 2008, and Trueba is the brother of the sequel’s director, Fernando Trueba.
