Short description
An unidentified craft is shot down over Moscow and crashes into the Chertanovo district, prompting the authorities to seal off the area and weigh an evacuation. A defence ministry team attempts to make contact with the surviving visitors, while residents who have seen inside the ship begin to question their own existence, and others, including those who lost people in the crash, want the newcomers gone.
Fyodor Bondarchuk directed the film, which followed Stalingrad in his filmography and preceded Invasion and Attraction 3. Oleg Malovichko, Andrey Zolotarev and Olga Larionova wrote the screenplay, and Bondarchuk produced with Anton Zlatopolskiy and Mikhail Vrubel. Irina Starshenbaum plays Yulya Lebedeva, Alexander Petrov plays Artyom, Rinal Mukhametov plays the alien Haakon, and Oleg Menshikov, Sergey Garmash and Nikita Kukushkin appear among the twenty credited cast members.
Released in January 2017, the Russian science-fiction drama runs 117 minutes. Its reported budget far exceeded its worldwide theatrical returns, which were modest by comparison. On IMDb it holds 5.6 out of 10 from around 15,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6.7 from roughly 940 votes. A critics' rating of 4.9 from 11 reviews places it below the audience scores on both platforms.
What's left behind the scenes
- Graffiti was created by Oleg Basket and Misha Most. Basket is one of the first graffiti artists and a pioneer of the hip-hop movement in Russia. Most is an artist, a member of the "Why" team, and a curator of projects dedicated to street art.
- Even before filming began, a non-disclosure agreement was signed by every member of the film crew without exception. For the first time in domestic cinema, mobile phones were prohibited on the set itself, and their cameras were taped over.
- Initially, Fyodor Bondarchuk planned to be only the producer of the film, but as he worked on the project, he became so engrossed that he decided to take on the direction as well.
- The casting process took almost a year, and hundreds of young actors were considered.
- When Oleg Menshikov agreed to star in "The Attraction," Fyodor Bondarchuk didn't immediately believe it. Working with actor Menshikov, who is known for being selective about his roles, had long been a dream of director Bondarchuk.
- Producers Mikhail Vrubel and Alexander Andryushchenko of the Hydrogen film company shared the film idea with Fyodor Bondarchuk while filming the family comedy "The Ghost," in which Bondarchuk played the lead role.
- During filming, actor Alexander Petrov cut his leg with glass and damaged his tendons. He was subsequently forced to film with a cast and use a stunt double.

- Military personnel from the Navy, Aerospace Forces, Ground Forces, EMERCOM, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs were invited as consultants during the preparation for filming.
- The sound design for the film "Attraction" was done by New Zealander Dave Whitehead ("King Kong", "The Hobbit", "District 9"). His previous work was the science fiction blockbuster "Arrival".
- The project became the fourth Russian film to be converted to the IMAX format, following "Stalingrad," "The Crew," and "The Duelist."
- Most of the filming took place in the Severnoe Chertanovo district, where the main character's house, the school, and the streets were filmed.
- Filming took place under strict secrecy in various districts of Moscow, including at facilities of the Ministry of Defense with the involvement of the latest military equipment of the Russian Armed Forces.

- Approximately 1.5 years were spent on working with the effects. The most challenging scene is considered to be the spaceship crash.
- Thanks to the sale of rights for foreign releases, the film recouped its costs even before its release in Russian theaters.
- On its opening day, January 26th, the film grossed 44 million rubles. In the first three days of release in Russia, the film grossed 267.6 million rubles. Over the first week of release, preliminary data shows the film grossed 413.4 million rubles, achieving the fifth-best result among Russian films.
- Visual effects were created by 255 artists from the Russian company "Main Road Post," which had previously worked on the films "Metro," "August 8th," "Special Forces," "Stalingrad," and "The Duelist."
- For the first time, filmmakers were allowed to shoot on the aircraft carrier "Admiral Kuznetsov", where the crew filmed fighter jet flyovers that can be seen at the very beginning of the film. Hero of Russia, test pilot Oleg Mutovin, participated in the filming.
- The film recouped its costs even before its theatrical release thanks to the sale of rights abroad.
- Filming of the picture was completed on December 12, 2015.
- Domestic military equipment was used in the filming: APCs, helicopters, robots, drones, and even the heavy aircraft-carrying missile cruiser "Admiral Kuznetsov".
