Priest

Father Greg Pilkington is a young Catholic priest posted to a parish near Liverpool, where he works alongside the older, more progressive Father Matthew. Greg holds conservative views, but his private life puts him at odds with church teaching: he is gay and has begun a relationship with a man named Graham. A girl in his congregation confides in him about abuse by her father, and the secrecy of the confessional leaves him unable to act on what he has been told. When Greg's sexuality becomes public knowledge, most of the parish turns away from him.

The film is a British drama directed by Antonia Bird, who made it between Mad Love and Face, from a screenplay by Jimmy McGovern. Linus Roache plays Greg, with Tom Wilkinson as Father Matthew and Robert Carlyle as Graham. Cathy Tyson, Lesley Sharp and Robert Pugh appear in supporting roles, among a credited cast of 41. It was produced by PolyGram Filmed Entertainment, Miramax and BBC Film, and took about 4 million dollars worldwide.
