It's Such a Beautiful Day follows Bill, an ordinary middle-aged man, as he tries to hold his fractured mind together. Don Hertzfeldt wrote, directed and produced the film, which expands his earlier trilogy of short animated works into a single feature. The story moves through Bill's daily life and his struggling memory as he confronts a hereditary mental illness, drifting through episodes of delirium while searching for whether his life still holds meaning. The narrator and a doctor are voiced by Hertzfeldt and Sara Cushman. Running just over an hour, it mixes animation with dark comedy.
The film was released in 2012, the first of three features Hertzfeldt has directed, followed by ME in 2024 and Paper Trail in 2026. It was made through his own production company, Bitter Films. The voice cast is small, with the director himself narrating.
It's Such a Beautiful Day drew a critics' rating of 8.5/10 from 33 reviews, while audiences on TMDB give it 7.9/10 from 382 votes. The two scores sit close together, suggesting that critics and viewers respond to the film in similar ways.
