A Wrinkle in Time
Short description
Meg Murry is a bright teenager who has never quite fitted in at school, and her life is further unsettled when her scientist father disappears without explanation. With her younger brother Charles Wallace and a classmate named Calvin, she learns that his research opened a path across space and time, and that three strange beings have arrived to guide the children along it. Their search takes them through otherworldly places, where they must face a dark force spreading through the universe and come to terms with who they are.
The film is an adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's novel, directed by Ava DuVernay. It followed her earlier features Middle of Nowhere and Selma and her documentary 13th, and was the fourth film she directed. Storm Reid plays Meg, with Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling as the three guides, and Levi Miller and Deric McCabe among the supporting cast. The screenplay was written by Jeff Stockwell and Jennifer Lee.
Produced by Walt Disney Pictures with a budget of about 103 million dollars, the film took roughly 133 million dollars worldwide, a modest return on its cost. Audiences were unenthusiastic: it holds 4.3 out of 10 on IMDb from around 50,000 votes and 5 out of 10 on TMDB. A critics' rating of 5.3 out of 10 from 342 reviews places it close to the audience scores.

- In Madeleine L’Engle’s 1962 novel, which served as the literary basis for the screenplay, Meg and her relatives were of European descent. The filmmakers preferred to “modernize” this nuance and included representatives of different races in the family. According to Chris Pine, who also starred in the film as Meg’s father, it was the presence of representatives of different races in the main character’s family that attracted him and convinced him to join the project.
- Oprah Winfrey received the role without an audition. She corresponded with director Ava DuVernay on social media, who once mentioned that she was starting work on this film and asked Winfrey if she would like to star in it. Winfrey immediately agreed.
