Short description

After witnessing his father's murder at the hands of a martial arts master, a boy is left mute by the trauma and grows up in a Shaolin monastery. There he trains in kung fu and forms a bond with a dangerous prisoner held in the temple's cellar, a former monk who teaches him a secret fighting style. Other teachers add techniques of their own, including the Gliding Snake and Drunken Master methods. His training culminates in the wooden men chamber, a test of endurance and skill, while the question of whether his strength will serve vengeance or something else hangs over him.

The film stars Jackie Chan as the young man known as Little Mute, alongside Doris Lung Chun-Erh, Chin Kang, Chang Ping-Yu, Chang I-Fei and Chiu Lo-Kong, in a credited cast of twenty-three. Charlie Chen Chi-Hwa directed from a screenplay by Gam Yam, with Hsu Li-Hwa producing for Toei Central Film and Lo Wei Motion Picture Co. It was Chen's first film as director in a run that continued with I Want More! later the same year, then Snake & Crane Arts of Shaolin and Half a Loaf of Kung Fu in 1978.

Released in Hong Kong in October 1976 and running 97 minutes, the action film took about a million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.3 out of 10 from roughly 3,300 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.8 out of 10 from a much smaller group of 147 voters.

What's left behind the scenes

  • During filming, Jackie Chan suffered deep cuts to his hand.
  • The film has an alternate ending in which the Silent One spares, rather than kills, his father's murderer. This ending can only be seen in the Taiwanese version of the film.
  • Another translation of the title is "Shaolin Wooden Men".
  • The American version of the film is almost 50 minutes shorter, lasting only 40 minutes, resulting in the plot being practically "mangled".
  • The wooden statues from the film served as the prototype for the character Mokujin from the "Tekken" video game series.
