The film picks up after a devastating loss for the ship girls, the young women who carry the spirits of Second World War warships. A cruiser squadron stages a night raid on the enemy Abyssal fleet, winning the engagement at a cost. The victory brings an unexpected arrival: a ship girl who emerges from the sea and is taken to a forward base in the Solomon Islands. She returns with amnesia and the effects of trauma, unable to recognize most of the comrades she once knew.

Keizo Kusakawa directed the film, which followed Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha: The Movie 1st in his filmography, working from a screenplay by Jukki Hanada and Kensuke Tanaka. The voice cast includes Sumire Uesaka, Saki Fujita, Yuka Iguchi, Ayane Sakura, Ayana Taketatsu and Nao Toyama, several of them voicing multiple characters.

The film is a theatrical follow-up to the KanColle television series, released in Japan in November 2016 and running 93 minutes. The production involved the companies WOWOW, movic, KADOKAWA and FlyingDog, with Satoshi Motonaga and Daijo Kudo as producers. On TMDB it holds a rating of 5 out of 10 from 23 votes, a small sample reflecting a muted response.
