Short description
A woodcarver named Geppetto creates a puppet from wood that miraculously comes to life. Named Pinocchio, the puppet is raised as Geppetto's son but struggles to behave and frequently wanders away from home. As he seeks adventure, he encounters various magical creatures and faces numerous mishaps. Guided by the Fata Turchina, Pinocchio must change his behavior and learn to be good if he wishes to fulfill his dream of becoming a real human boy.
Directed by Matteo Garrone, this fantasy drama is the seventh film in his career, following Dogman. The screenplay was written by Garrone and Massimo Ceccherini. The movie features Federico Ielapi in the title role, alongside Roberto Benigni as Geppetto and Marine Vacth as Fata Turchina. The cast also includes Gigi Proietti, Massimo Ceccherini, and Rocco Papaleo.
Produced in Italy, France, Belgium, and the United Kingdom, the film had a budget of 12 million USD and earned 17 million USD at the worldwide box office. It holds a rating of 6.3/10 on IMDb from 16,000 votes and 6.6/10 on TMDB from 1,595 votes. Film critics gave the movie a slightly higher score of 6.9/10 based on 64 reviews.

- After several adaptations of the story about the wooden boy aimed at family viewing, director Matteo Garrone decided to revive the dark atmosphere and satirical tone of Carlo Collodi's (1826-1890) original novel, "The Adventures of Pinocchio: The Story of a Puppet" (1881), along with its scenes of cruelty and extreme poverty. According to Garrone, the film's content was criticized during previews, mainly by adults, while children generally accepted the on-screen violence and depictions of poverty as a matter of course.
- Director Matteo Garrone paid 113,000 euros out of his own pocket for the English dub of the film.
- According to Matteo Garrone, the most difficult scenes to shoot were those in Toyland. Dozens of children were released onto the set, and instead of playing with each other, they started fighting over the toys. As Garrone later recounted, it looked more like a battlefield than a playground.
