In 2026, a new augmented-reality device called the Augma arrives on the market. Unlike the full-dive hardware that Kazuto Kirigaya and his friends once used, it keeps players conscious while overlaying game elements onto the real world, and it quickly becomes popular. The game built for it, Ordinal Scale, turns everyday surroundings into a battlefield, with players earning rankings through their performance. Asuna and the others have been playing for some time before Kirito joins them, but events in the game soon prove more serious than simple entertainment.
Sword Art Online the Movie: Ordinal Scale is a 2017 Japanese animated action and fantasy film directed by Tomohiko Ito, who wrote the screenplay with Reki Kawahara. It followed Ito's earlier Sword Art Online: Extra Edition from 2013 and preceded his later features Hello World and The Keeper of the Camphor Tree. Yoshitsugu Matsuoka voices Kirito and Haruka Tomatsu voices Asuna, with Kanae Ito, Ayana Taketatsu, Rina Hidaka and Ayahi Takagaki among the supporting cast.
The film was released in February 2017 and took about 29 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds 7.3 out of 10 from around 10,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7.7 from roughly 784 votes, a small audience sample with a slightly warmer average.
