The Levelling

Clover Catto is completing her veterinary training when she learns that her brother Harry has died, and she returns to the family farm in Somerset that she left years earlier. Her mother is gone and she has not spoken to her father, Aubrey, in a long time. She finds the farm badly damaged by recent flooding and Aubrey worn down by a series of losses. As the funeral approaches and Clover tries to understand what happened to her brother, father and daughter have to rebuild their relationship while dealing with the pressures bearing down on the farm.

The Levelling is a British drama written and directed by Hope Dickson Leach, marking her first feature film. Ellie Kendrick plays Clover and David Troughton plays Aubrey, with Jack Holden, Joe Blakemore, Angela Curran and Joe Attewell in supporting roles. Rachel Robey produced the film, which had a budget of about one million dollars.

Released in May 2017, the film runs 83 minutes. Critical response was notably stronger than general audience reaction: critics' reviews average 7.5 out of 10, while on IMDb the rating stands at 6.4 from roughly 2,900 votes and on TMDB at 6.1 from a much smaller number of votes. The gap suggests the film was appreciated more by reviewers than by the broader viewing public.
