Short description
Set in 1870 near the Oregon coast, this story follows Samuel Alabaster, a wealthy businessman traveling through the American West to find and marry his love, Penelope. He is joined by Henry, a man struggling with his past who hopes to become a preacher. As they trek through the wilderness, the journey becomes a dangerous adventure involving various obstacles and figures, including the Cornell brothers.
Directed by Nathan and David Zellner, this was the first of three films they directed together, preceding Sasquatch Sunset and Alpha Gang. The brothers also wrote the screenplay and served as producers. The movie features Robert Pattinson as Samuel and Mia Wasikowska as Penelope, with David Zellner playing Parson Henry and Nathan Zellner appearing as Rufus Cornell. Other cast members include Joseph Billingiere and Robert Forster.
The film has received mixed reactions from viewers, holding a 5.5 rating on IMDb based on 6,300 votes and a 5.3 rating on TMDB from 167 votes. In comparison, the film critics' rating is slightly higher at 6.5 based on 118 reviews.
What's left behind the scenes
- After first reading the script, Robert Pattinson declined to participate in the project, stating that not enough money would be raised for its realization. Several weeks later, he accidentally saw David and Nathan Zellner’s previous project, “Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter” (2014), and his agent informed him that Pattinson had recently rejected the script for these directors’ next project.
