Europa '51 centres on Irene Girard, a wealthy American living in Rome whose comfortable, detached existence unravels after her young son dies. Overcome by guilt and a sense that her life has been empty, she turns away from her marriage and her social circle and begins visiting the city's poor, sick and marginalised, including a dying prostitute and a single mother struggling to raise six children. Her husband, a diplomat, sees her increasingly single-minded charity as a sign of instability, and the conflict between them grows as she helps a young man evade the police, leading him to have her confined to a psychiatric institution. The film stars Ingrid Bergman as Irene, with Alexander Knox as her husband George, alongside Ettore Giannini, Giulietta Masina, Teresa Pellati and Marcella Rovena.
Roberto Rossellini directed from a screenplay he wrote with Sandro De Feo and Mario Pannunzio, producing with Dino De Laurentiis and Carlo Ponti. It was released in December 1952 and followed Stromboli (1950) in his filmography, coming before Journey to Italy (1954). The second of his collaborations with Bergman, made after Rome, Open City (1945), Paisan (1946) and Germany, Year Zero (1948), it runs 118 minutes.
Audience response has been solid: on IMDb the drama holds a rating of 7.4/10 from around 5,400 votes, and on TMDB a comparable 7.3/10 from 162 votes. This consistency indicates a film that continues to find a receptive viewership decades after release.
