The Smurfs

The Smurfs follows the small blue creatures of a hidden village whose peaceful life is shattered when the wizard Gargamel discovers their home and drives them out. A mishap during the escape sends a handful of Smurfs through a magical portal into present-day New York City, where they land in Central Park. Led by Papa Smurf and accompanied by Smurfette and Clumsy, they take shelter with a young married couple expecting a child while searching for a way to reverse the spell and return home. Gargamel follows them into the city and continues his pursuit, determined to capture them.

Raja Gosnell directed the film, which sits between Beverly Hills Chihuahua and The Smurfs 2 in a run of comedies he made from the late 1990s onward. The screenplay is credited to J. David Stem, David N. Weiss and David Ronn, with Jordan Kerner producing. Hank Azaria plays Gargamel in live action, Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays play the couple who take the Smurfs in, and the voice cast includes Jonathan Winters as Papa Smurf, Katy Perry as Smurfette and Anton Yelchin as Clumsy. The film was a Belgian-American production made for about 110 million dollars and took roughly 564 million dollars worldwide.

Audience reactions were middling, with a rating of 5.4 on IMDb from about 104,000 votes and 5.8 on TMDB from more than 4,000 votes. A critics' rating of 4 out of 10 from 118 reviews places professional assessments below the audience scores.
