Three Seasons

Three Seasons is a drama set in Ho Chi Minh City, where several lives intersect against a backdrop of poverty and rapid modernization. Hai, a cyclo driver, becomes attached to Lan, a sex worker whose circumstances leave her wary of genuine affection, and he looks for ways to raise money in order to stay near her. A young woman named Kien An takes work gathering lotus flowers for a reclusive poet afflicted with leprosy. Elsewhere, Woody, a boy who sells trinkets to tourists, loses the case containing his merchandise. Into this setting comes James Hager, a former American soldier searching for the daughter he left behind at the end of the Vietnam War.

Tony Bui directed and wrote the film, his first feature, which came before The Throwaways in his filmography. The cast includes Đơn Dương, Nguyễn Thị Ngọc Hiệp, Diep Bui, Huu Duoc Nguyen and Diễm Kiều, with Harvey Keitel appearing as Hager. The production was a collaboration between Vietnamese and American companies and was shot in Vietnam.

Released in 1999, the film earned about two million dollars worldwide and runs 105 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 7.2 from roughly 3,500 votes, and on TMDB it also scores 7.2, based on a much smaller number of 35 votes.
