Door to Door

Based on the true story of Bill Porter, Door to Door follows a man born with cerebral palsy who is determined to make his own living as a door-to-door salesman. Set in Portland, Oregon, the story begins in 1955, when Bill sets out to follow in his father's footsteps in sales. His speech and movement are affected by his condition, and he is turned away by companies that consider him unfit for the work. Encouraged and supported by his devoted mother, he eventually persuades a small firm to take him on and is given the least promising sales route. What follows is a long, patient effort to build a career on his own terms.

Steven Schachter directed the film, his second feature after For All Time, and wrote the screenplay with William H. Macy, who plays Bill Porter. Kyra Sedgwick appears as Shelly Soomky Brady, Kathy Baker as Gladys Sullivan, and Helen Mirren as Bill's mother, with Joel Brooks and Woody Jeffreys among a credited cast of fifty-five. The production was made for television by Turner Network Television with Rosemont Productions International and Angel/Brown Productions, and runs ninety minutes.

On IMDb, the film holds a rating of 7.7 from around 5,000 votes. On TMDB it has a 7.5 from a much smaller number of votes, roughly seventy. The two scores sit close together, suggesting a consistently favourable response from viewers across both platforms, although the far larger sample on IMDb gives that rating more weight.
