Mississippi Masala

Mina was born in Uganda to an Indian family that was forced to leave the country in 1972 under Idi Amin's regime. The family settles in Mississippi, where Mina grows up helping to run a motel. Now in her twenties, she begins a romance with Demetrius, a Black carpet cleaner. Their relationship meets resistance from both of their conservative families and brings to the surface the divisions between the area's Indian and African-American communities.

Mira Nair directed the film, her second feature after Salaam Bombay! in 1988 and the second entry in a career that later included Monsoon Wedding, The Namesake and Queen of Katwe. Sooni Taraporevala wrote the screenplay. Denzel Washington plays Demetrius, with Sarita Choudhury as Mina, Roshan Seth as her father Jay, Sharmila Tagore as her mother Kinnu, and Charles S. Dutton and Joe Seneca among the supporting cast. The production involved 66 credited cast members and 41 credited crew members.

Made on a budget of about 5 million dollars, the film took roughly 7 million dollars worldwide. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.8 from around 7,400 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.4 from about 105 votes. A critics' rating of 7.6 from 77 reviews places it above both audience scores.
