Surviving Picasso

Surviving Picasso is a British-American drama set largely in France after the Second World War. In 1943, the young painter Françoise Gilot meets Pablo Picasso, already a celebrated figure, and becomes his companion. Over the decade that follows she bears him two children and continues to work as an artist herself, while Picasso's earlier partners, among them Dora Maar, remain part of the world she has entered. The film follows the relationship and the strain Gilot faces in preserving her independence within it. Anthony Hopkins plays Picasso and Natascha McElhone plays Gilot, with Julianne Moore as Dora Maar, Joss Ackland as Henri Matisse and Joan Plowright as Gilot's grandmother.

James Ivory directed, from a screenplay by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, with Ismail Merchant and David L. Wolper producing. It was Ivory's eighth theatrical feature, arriving after The Remains of the Day and before Le Divorce and The White Countess, and it continued the Merchant Ivory partnership's run of literary and historical dramas.

The film received a critics' rating of 5.1 out of 10 from 20 reviews, and sits at 5.8 out of 10 on TMDB from 108 votes, so audiences there rated it somewhat above the critical consensus. Made for a budget of 16 million dollars, it returned about 2 million dollars worldwide.
