Esteros is an Argentine drama about Matías and Jerónimo, friends since childhood in a small town near the Iberá wetlands. As adolescents they grow closer and become attracted to each other, but Matías's father disapproves and the boys are separated by circumstance. About ten years later, Matías returns from Brazil, where his family moved, bringing his girlfriend along. He and Jerónimo meet again, Jerónimo now living openly as a gay artist in their hometown. The two young men travel together to the wetlands where they once came close to acknowledging their feelings, and Matías must confront emotions he has long suppressed, with the pull of a conventional future and the homophobia of his surroundings weighing on him.
The film is Papu Curotto's first feature as director and he also produced it; his second, León, followed in 2024. The screenplay is by Andi Nachon. Ignacio Rogers plays the adult Matías and Esteban Masturini the adult Jerónimo, with Joaquín Parada and Blas Finardi Niz as the boys, and Renata Calmon and María Merlino in supporting roles. Shot in Argentina, it runs 83 minutes and was released in 2016.
Audience response has been generally favourable. On IMDb it holds 7 out of 10 across roughly 5,700 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.6 out of 10 from a much smaller base of 143 votes, a level of agreement suggesting a modest but appreciative following for the film.
