The Bride Wore Black
Short description
After Julie Kohler is widowed on her wedding day, when her groom is shot outside the church, she tries to take her own life and is stopped by her mother. She then sets out to find the five men she holds responsible for his death, drawing on her charm to get close to each of them before killing them in turn. Her list of names shrinks one by one, and the further she goes, the harder the next step becomes. The story is based on a novel by American crime writer Cornell Woolrich.
François Truffaut directed, working from a screenplay adapted from Woolrich's book. The film is the eighth of the fourteen features he directed in chronological order, arriving between Stolen Kisses and Bed and Board. Jeanne Moreau leads as Julie, with Michel Bouquet, Jean-Claude Brialy, Charles Denner, Claude Rich and Michael Lonsdale among the men in her path; twenty-seven performers are credited in all. Marcel Berbert and Oscar Lewenstein produced, and the production was a French-Italian effort.
The film took about ten million dollars at the worldwide box office. On TMDB it holds a rating of 7.1 out of 10 from 297 votes, which suggests a generally positive response from viewers years after its release.
