In 1990s Manhattan, teenager Ali Jacobs lives with her parents and her older sister Dana. When Ali discovers that her father may be having an affair, the revelation unsettles the household. Dana, meanwhile, is dealing with a mistake that threatens her long-term relationship, while their mother Pat finds her patience wearing thin. The two sisters try to navigate their own troubles as the family's stability comes under strain.
Landline is a comedy-drama directed by Gillian Robespierre, who wrote the screenplay with Elisabeth Holm. The film is her second feature, following her debut Obvious Child, and Holm also produced alongside Gigi Pritzker and Russell Levine. Jenny Slate, who starred in Robespierre's first film, plays Dana, with Abby Quinn as Ali, Edie Falco as Pat and John Turturro as Alan. Jay Duplass and Finn Wittrock appear in supporting roles, and the production credits 28 cast members and 82 crew members.
Released in July 2017, the film runs 93 minutes and was produced with backing from companies in the United States and Korea. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.4 from around 5,100 votes, while on TMDB its rating is 6.2 from roughly 100 votes. The two audience scores are close, indicating a similar, moderate response across both platforms. Robespierre later directed the 2024 comedy special Jenny Slate: Seasoned Professional.
