Ronit Krushka left her Orthodox Jewish community in London years ago and built a life in New York as a photographer. When her father, the community's rabbi, dies, she returns for his funeral and finds herself among people who once turned away from her. She learns that Esti, the friend she was drawn to in her youth, has married Dovid, a Torah scholar and a friend of Ronit's. Ronit and Esti's reunion revives a connection they never fully put behind them, and both women must weigh it against the strict expectations of the world they grew up in.
Sebastián Lelio directed the film, his fourth feature after Christmas, Gloria and A Fantastic Woman, and he wrote the screenplay with Rebecca Lenkiewicz. Rachel Weisz plays Ronit and also produced alongside Frida Torresblanco and Ed Guiney; Rachel McAdams plays Esti, Alessandro Nivola plays Dovid, and Allan Corduner, Anton Lesser and Nicholas Woodeson appear in supporting roles. Filmed in the United Kingdom, Ireland and the United States, the drama runs 114 minutes.
Against a budget of about 6 million dollars, the film took roughly 8 million dollars worldwide, a modest return. It holds a 6.6 rating on IMDb from 40,000 votes and a 6.9 on TMDB from 1,304 votes, while its critics' rating stands at 7.2 from 212 reviews, so reviewers rated it somewhat more warmly than the wider audience did.
