Katja's life falls apart when her husband Nuri and young son Rocc are killed in a bomb attack in Hamburg. The police arrest a young neo-Nazi couple, and the case goes to trial with Danilo Fava, Nuri's closest friend and a lawyer, representing Katja. When the proceedings fail to deliver the justice she expects, she turns to drastic measures of her own.
Fatih Akin directed and co-wrote the film with Hark Bohm, and produced it with Marie-Jeanne Pascal and Mélita Toscan du Plantier. It was Akin's eighth fiction feature, following Goodbye Berlin in 2016. Diane Kruger plays Katja, with Denis Moschitto as Danilo, Numan Acar as Nuri, Johannes Krisch as defense attorney Habberbeck, and Ulrich Brandhoff and Hanna Hilsdorf as the accused couple. The production was a German, Italian and French co-production involving Warner Bros. Pictures, Canal+, Ciné+ and Pathé.
The film drew a worldwide box office of about 5 million US dollars, a modest figure consistent with its scale as a German-language drama. On IMDb it holds 7.1/10 from roughly 38,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.9/10 from around 900 votes, while the critics' rating stands at 6.7/10 from 151 reviews, putting critics slightly below the general audience.
