Burden is set in Laurens, South Carolina, in the 1990s, where Mike Burden has risen through the ranks of the Ku Klux Klan. Orphaned young, he is fiercely loyal to Tom Griffin, the local Klan leader who raised him. Mike opens a Klan shop and museum, but his feelings for Judy, a single mother, push him to question the world he belongs to. When he breaks with the organisation, his former associates turn against him, and an African American reverend named Kennedy, who leads a local congregation, takes Mike, Judy and her son under his protection. The film follows Mike's attempt to leave his past behind while the town's racial tensions close in around him.
The drama was written and directed by Andrew Heckler, working from events reported to have happened in Laurens, and produced by Bill Kenwright and Robbie Brenner. Garrett Hedlund plays Mike, with Andrea Riseborough as Judy, Forest Whitaker as Reverend Kennedy and Tom Wilkinson as Tom Griffin. Usher and Tess Harper also appear.
It runs 129 minutes and was released in 2018. On TMDB it holds a rating of 6.1 from 88 votes, and it drew a matching critics' rating of 6.1 from 72 reviews, so audiences and reviewers responded to it in similar terms.
