Crown Heights tells the story of Colin Warner, a young man in Brooklyn who is arrested for a murder he did not commit, and of his friend Carl King, who spends years fighting to prove Colin's innocence. Set in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn in the early 1980s, the film follows Colin's imprisonment and the toll it takes on him as hope fades, while Carl works to gather evidence and challenge a conviction that the legal system shows little interest in revisiting.
The drama was directed by Matt Ruskin, who also wrote the screenplay, marking his first feature behind the camera; his second, Boston Strangler, followed in 2023. LaKeith Stanfield plays Colin Warner, with Nnamdi Asomugha as Carl King. Asomugha also produced the film alongside Natalie Galazka and Matt Ruskin. The cast includes Natalie Paul, Bill Camp, Nestor Carbonell and Amari Cheatom, among 24 credited performers.
Released in August 2017, the film runs 96 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.7 from around 3,100 votes, and on TMDB a rating of 6.6 from 73 votes. The two audience scores are close, indicating a modest but consistent response rather than sharply divided opinion.
