Cindy Campbell takes a job as a home caregiver for an elderly woman whose house is haunted by the ghost of a young boy, and she sets out to learn who he was and how he died. At the same time she grows close to Tom, a widowed neighbour raising two children on his own. Their romance is interrupted when giant alien tripods begin attacking the world, and Cindy comes to believe that breaking the house's curse is the key to stopping the invasion.

The film is a comedy directed by David Zucker, his ninth feature and the follow-up to Scary Movie 3 in his filmography. Jim Abrahams, Craig Mazin and Pat Proft wrote the screenplay, and Robert K. Weiss and Mazin produced. Anna Faris returns as Cindy, with Regina Hall, Craig Bierko, Bill Pullman, Anthony Anderson and Leslie Nielsen among the credited cast of 114; the crew numbered 197. Made for a budget of 40 million dollars, it took in 179 million worldwide, a strong return relative to its cost.

Audience response was middling: on IMDb it holds 5.1/10 from around 139,000 votes, and on TMDB 5.5/10 from roughly 3,700 votes. A critics' rating of 4.6/10 from 125 reviews places it slightly below both audience scores.
