INAATE/SE/ examines the Seven Fires Prophecy, an ancient Ojibway legend that both preceded and anticipated the arrival of Europeans. Using a mix of experimental, narrative, and documentary styles, the film explores how this prophecy influences various generations of an indigenous community in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. By contrasting the sacred and the profane, the work looks at the development of contemporary indigenous identity and moves away from a linear view of colonized history.
The film was co-directed by Zack Khalil and Adam Khalil. It is the first of two films they directed together, followed by Aanikoobijigan [ancestor/great-grandparent/great-grandchild] in 2026. The production was managed by producers Sarah Kerr, Carolyn Lazard, and Alexandra Lazarowich. This 71-minute documentary was a joint production between Canada and the United States and was released on February 29, 2016. On IMDb, the film has a rating of 6.1/10 based on 45 votes.
