After decades of a comfortable marriage to Mike, a police officer who has risen to a title, Sandra Abbott is looking forward to a settled retirement. The couple's celebration on their country estate instead brings a shock: Sandra learns that Mike has been unfaithful to her with her closest friend. She leaves him and moves into the London flat of her older sister Bif, from whom she has drifted apart over the years.
Bif is free-spirited and lives in a modest part of the city, a world away from the life Sandra knew. Reluctantly at first, Sandra lets her sister bring her to a community dance class for older people, where she meets Charlie Glover, a furniture restorer who lives on a boat. Through the group and her sister, Sandra begins to build a life of her own.
Richard Loncraine directed the film, the eighth in his filmography, following 5 Flights Up, and the screenplay is by Nick Moorcroft and Meg Leonard. Imelda Staunton plays Sandra, with Celia Imrie as Bif, Timothy Spall as Charlie, and Joanna Lumley, David Hayman and John Sessions in supporting roles. Made for roughly 7 million dollars, it took about 16 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6.8 from around 7,800 votes, and on TMDB 7 from 185 votes, against a critics' score of 5.8 from 88 reviews.
