The Detective
Short description
Joe Leland is a New York City police detective assigned to the murder of Teddy Leikman, the son of a wealthy department store owner. As he works the case, he finds connections between the killing and corruption inside the police department, drawing him into a milieu of sex and drugs and forcing him to weigh his own integrity against the compromises around him. Frank Sinatra plays Leland, with Lee Remick as his wife Karen, and Ralph Meeker, Jack Klugman, Horace McMahon and Lloyd Bochner among the supporting cast.
The film is a crime drama directed by Gordon Douglas, the fourteenth of the sixteen features listed in his filmography, arriving between Chuka and They Call Me Mister Tibbs! Abby Mann and Roderick Thorp wrote the screenplay, and Aaron Rosenberg produced it for 20th Century Fox and Arcola Pictures. It runs 114 minutes.
Released in May 1968, the production cost four million dollars and returned seven million worldwide, a modest profit by the standards of a major studio release. Audiences have been mixed on it since: on IMDb it holds 6.5 from roughly 4,500 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.9 from a much smaller group of 79.
What's left behind the scenes
- The plot of Roderick Thorpe's second novel about police officer Joseph LeLand (Nothing Lasts Forever, 1979) was used as the basis for the film "Die Hard" (1988), in which the main character, played by Bruce Willis, was named John McClane.
- Frank Sinatra (1915-1998) was supposed to star in this film with his wife, but Mia Farrow was busy with Roman Polanski on the cult film "Rosemary's Baby" (1968), which was drastically behind schedule, and therefore declined. Sinatra was so angry that he replaced Farrow with actress Jacqueline Bisset, and Farrow informed him of the divorce right on the set of "Rosemary's Baby".
