Roma

Roma is set in Mexico City in the early 1970s and follows Cleo, a young live-in domestic worker of Indigenous heritage employed by a white, middle-class family in the Colonia Roma neighbourhood. She cares for the household's four children and shares a close bond with them, while also keeping up with the endless demands of running the home. Over the course of a single year, strains within the family and unrest in the wider city unsettle the lives of Cleo and those around her.

Alfonso Cuarón wrote and directed the film, which he also produced with Nicolás Celis and Gabriela Rodríguez. It came after Gravity in his filmography and draws on his own childhood memories of the women who raised him. Yalitza Aparicio plays Cleo, with Marina de Tavira as Sofía, alongside Diego Cortina Autrey, Carlos Peralta, Marco Graf and Daniela Demesa as the children, in a cast of 22 credited performers. Shot in black and white, the production had a budget of 15 million USD.

Roma received a critics' rating of 8.9/10 from 409 reviews and holds a 7.6/10 rating on TMDB from over four thousand votes, indicating stronger praise from critics than from the wider audience. On IMDb, reception is similarly positive. Its worldwide box office of about 1 million USD is modest relative to its budget.
