The Nutcracker and the Four Realms
Short description
Clara Stahlbaum wants only one thing: a key that will open a box left to her by her late mother. At a Christmas party hosted by her godfather Drosselmeyer, a golden thread leads her into a strange parallel world, and the key disappears into it. There she meets a soldier named Phillip and a band of mice, and passes through three realms ruled by a Snow Queen, a Flower Queen and a Sugar Plum Fairy. Beyond them lies a fourth realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger, whose war brought trouble to the whole world. Clara and Phillip set out to recover the key and restore harmony.
The film is a Disney fantasy adventure based on E. T. A. Hoffmann's story and the ballet it inspired. Joe Johnston directed it, the tenth film in the chronological list of his work, with Lasse Hallström also credited as director, this being the eighteenth of the twenty films in his own list. Mackenzie Foy plays Clara, with Jayden Fowora-Knight as Phillip, Keira Knightley as the Sugar Plum Fairy, Helen Mirren as Mother Ginger and Morgan Freeman as Drosselmeyer. Ashleigh Powell wrote the screenplay, and Larry J. Franco and Mark Gordon produced.
Released in October 2018 with a runtime of 99 minutes, the film cost 120 million dollars and took 174 million worldwide, a modest return against its budget. It holds a 6.1 rating on TMDB from over two thousand votes, while its critics' rating stands at 5.1 from 203 reviews, so audiences rate it a little above the critics.
What's left behind the scenes
- While preparing for her role, Helen Mirren learned how to deliver whip cracks with a loud snap.
- Lasse Hallström completed the main filming period, after which, due to a number of reasons, he became occupied, and Joe Johnston took over reshoots of individual scenes over 32 days. Hallström returned to the project during post-production. As a result of these circumstances, both were credited as directors.

- At the beginning of the number that tells the story of the four kingdoms, a conductor appears on stage and begins to conduct, while the orchestra is represented only by silhouettes of musicians. This is a reference to Walt Disney's animated film 'Fantasia' (1940), which featured a similar segment based on the suite from 'The Nutcracker' (ballet by P.I. Tchaikovsky, 1892).
