The Happy Prince

The Happy Prince follows Oscar Wilde after his release from prison, where he served two years at hard labour for gross indecency. Leaving England behind, he settles in France, spending his final years in shabby hotels, in poor health and short of money, while memories of his past fame, his affair with Lord Alfred Douglas and the scandal that ruined him return. Robbie Ross stays close to him to the end.

Rupert Everett directed the film and wrote the screenplay, and plays Wilde himself. The cast includes Colin Firth as Reggie Turner, Emily Watson as Constance Wilde, Colin Morgan as Alfred Douglas and Edwin Thomas as Robbie Ross. It is a co-production between Germany, Belgium, the United Kingdom and Italy.

The film was released in April 2018 and runs 101 minutes. On IMDb it holds a rating of 6.3 from around 6,200 votes, and on TMDB 6.2 from roughly 194 votes, while critics gave it 6.5 from 136 reviews, placing it slightly above the audience scores. Its worldwide box office came to about 3 million dollars, a modest return for a period drama with this cast.
