Scorpio

CIA veteran Cross frequently works alongside Jean Laurier, a French freelance operative known as Scorpio, whom he has mentored and come to regard as a friend. When the agency comes to suspect Cross himself of being a double agent, it decides to have him eliminated. Because Scorpio knows Cross's methods and temperament better than anyone, he is the one ordered to carry out the killing, leaving him torn between loyalty to his teacher and obedience to his employers. Cross escapes, and the assignment turns into a pursuit that carries the two men across Europe.

Michael Winner directed the film, the sixth of the thirteen features he made in chronological order, arriving between The Stone Killer and Death Wish. David W. Rintels and Gerald Wilson wrote the screenplay, and Walter Mirisch produced for United Artists, The Mirisch Company and Scimitar Productions. Burt Lancaster plays Cross, Alain Delon is Scorpio, and Paul Scofield appears as the Soviet counterpart Zharkov, with John Colicos, Gayle Hunnicutt and J.D. Cannon among the credited cast of twenty-seven.

The film runs 114 minutes. Audience response has been moderate: it holds a rating of 6.4 out of 10 on IMDb from around 6,000 votes, and 6.2 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 123 votes. A critics' rating of 6.5 out of 10 from twenty-two reviews places professional assessment slightly above the audience scores on both platforms.
