Takatoshi Minamiyama studies art at a university in Kyoto. On the train to campus one morning, he notices Emi Fukuju and is immediately drawn to her. He works up the nerve to speak to her, and the two begin dating, settling into a happy routine together. Their relationship is soon complicated by a secret Emi keeps from him, one that shapes how much time they can share and what their future together can realistically hold.
Takahiro Miki directed the film, working from a screenplay by Tomoko Yoshida, with Hisashi Usui, Kei Haruna and Takahiro Kawada producing. It sits in the middle of Miki's filmography, arriving after Solanin and before Your Eyes Tell, The Door into Summer, Even If This Love Disappears Tonight, Drawing Closer, My Beloved Stranger, Until We Meet Again and The Last Song You Left Behind. Sota Fukushi and Nana Komatsu lead as Takatoshi and Emi, supported by Masahiro Higashide, Yuki Yamada, Kaya Kiyohara and Akira Otaka.
The film was released in Japan in December 2016 and runs 111 minutes. It took in roughly 14 million dollars worldwide, a solid return for a Japanese romantic drama of its scale. Audiences have responded warmly: on IMDb it holds a 7.4 rating from about 5,800 votes, and on TMDB a 7.5 from around 205 votes, closely matched scores that suggest the film has found a consistent audience beyond its home market.
