Chris Christofferson, an aging sailor living aboard a coal barge, has not seen his daughter Anna since she was a child, when he left her with relatives in Minnesota. He expects a respectable young woman to arrive; instead, Anna comes to him after years of hardship, her spirit worn down and her past far from what he imagines. When she falls for Matt Burke, a sailor she and her father rescue from the sea during a storm, Anna is torn between the love she has found and the truth she has kept from both men.
The film is an adaptation of Eugene O'Neill's play, directed by Clarence Brown and written for the screen by Frances Marion, with Irving Thalberg producing for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It followed Brown's The Eagle and preceded Letty Lynton among his directing credits. Greta Garbo leads as Anna, alongside Charles Bickford and George F. Marion, with Marie Dressler appearing as Marthy Owens. Audience response has been moderate: on IMDb it holds a 6.9 rating from just under a thousand votes, while on TMDB it sits at 6 from a much smaller group of voters. Garbo's first talking picture, the film runs 89 minutes.
