The Nile Hilton Incident

Set in Cairo in 2011, shortly before the Egyptian revolution, the film follows Noredin, a police officer who supplements his income through bribes and shakedowns of street vendors and shop owners. When a singer is found dead in a luxury suite at the Nile Hilton hotel, he is assigned to investigate. What first appears to be a crime of passion quickly draws in powerful figures who would prefer the case closed, and Noredin begins pursuing leads on his own as unrest builds in the city.

Tarik Saleh wrote and directed this crime drama, his first fiction feature. Fares Fares leads the cast as Noredin, with Mari Malek, Yasser Ali Maher, Slimane Dazi, Hania Amar and Hichem Yacoubi among the twenty credited performers. Produced by Kristina Åberg, the film was a co-production between Germany, Denmark, Morocco, France and Sweden, made for a budget of about four million dollars. It runs 111 minutes.

On IMDb the film holds a rating of 7 out of 10 from 55 reviews, while on TMDB it averages 6.6 out of 10 from 406 votes, a smaller and more mixed audience response than that of critics. It stands as the earliest of the director's four features to date, preceding The Contractor and Cairo Conspiracy, both released in 2022, and Eagles of the Republic from 2025.
