Beatriz at Dinner is a comedy-drama about Beatriz, a Mexican-born holistic healer who lives with several animals and earns a living treating clients, including cancer patients. After visiting a wealthy client, Kathy, her car refuses to start, leaving her stranded at Kathy's home on the evening of a dinner party celebrating a business deal. The other guests are affluent and mostly unfamiliar to her, among them Doug Strutt, a smug and successful real estate mogul. Beatriz, who feels out of place in the luxury around her, clashes with Doug, and the pleasant evening gradually turns into an uncomfortable confrontation between two people with opposing values and backgrounds.
Miguel Arteta directed the film from a screenplay by Mike White. It was released in 2017 and runs 82 minutes. The main cast includes Salma Hayek Pinault as Beatriz, John Lithgow as Doug Strutt, Connie Britton as Kathy, Jay Duplass as Alex, Amy Landecker as Jeana and Chloë Sevigny as Shannon. It was produced by Christine Vachon, Pamela Koffler and Aaron L. Gilbert.
The film holds a 6.5 out of 10 critics' rating from 135 reviews, slightly above its audience scores of 6 out of 10 on IMDb and 5.8 out of 10 on TMDB, which suggests critics responded to it somewhat more warmly than general viewers did. It followed Arteta's Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day and preceded Duck Butter, Like a Boss and YES DAY in his filmography.
