Short description
Wonder Wheel is set in the Coney Island amusement park of the 1950s, where the lives of four people become entangled. Ginny, a former actress with an unstable temperament, now waits tables in a clam house, while her husband Humpty runs the carousel. Mickey, a young lifeguard, hopes to make his name as a playwright. Their world shifts when Humpty's estranged daughter Carolina turns up and hides out in her father's apartment, on the run from gangsters she crossed.
Woody Allen wrote and directed the film, the forty-fifth of the forty-eight features he has directed in chronological order, following Café Society and preceding A Rainy Day in New York. Kate Winslet plays Ginny, with Jim Belushi as Humpty, Justin Timberlake as Mickey, and Juno Temple as Carolina. Letty Aronson, Edward Walson and Erika Aronson produced.
The film had a budget of 25 million US dollars and took about 15 million worldwide, leaving it well short of its cost. On IMDb it holds 6.2 out of 10 from roughly 33,000 votes, and on TMDB 6.4 out of 10 from about 1,375 votes. A film critics' rating of 5 out of 10 from 202 reviews places it below both audience scores.
What's left behind the scenes
- Costume designer Suzie Benzinger had trouble with the costume for Mickey, played by Justin Timberlake, as almost no photographs of lifeguard costumes from Coney Island from that era had survived, and those that remained were incomprehensible. Eventually, she reached out to Marty Olvin – a former Coney Island lifeguard who gave an interview to Esquire magazine in 1949.
- Many of the costumes worn by the extras belonged to people from the era depicted in the film. They were collected by costume designer Suzie Benzinger.
- With the exception of the interiors of Ginny and Hampty’s apartment (played by Kate Winslet and James Belushi), the entire film was shot on Coney Island. The storefronts and signs of the shops there were changed to those that existed in the 1950s.
