A Fantastic Woman

A Fantastic Woman centres on Marina, a young waitress and aspiring singer in Santiago, Chile, whose life is upended when her older partner, Orlando, dies suddenly after a birthday celebration. The hospital cannot save him, and Marina soon finds herself treated as a suspect rather than a grieving partner. Orlando's ex-wife and family shut her out, excluding her from the funeral and pressing her to leave the home she shared with him. Their hostility is rooted in her identity as a transgender woman. The film follows Marina as she asserts her right to mourn and to live as the woman she is.

Sebastián Lelio directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Gonzalo Maza, the pair behind several of Lelio's earlier features. Released in 2017, the film sits between Gloria and Disobedience in the director's filmography, which runs from Christmas through to The Wave. Daniela Vega leads the cast as Marina, with Francisco Reyes as Orlando, alongside Luis Gnecco, Aline Küppenheim, Nicolás Saavedra and Amparo Noguera. Pablo Larraín and Juan de Dios Larraín produced through Fabula, with backing from Participant, Sony Pictures Classics and ZDF among others.

The film earned a worldwide box office of around 2 million dollars. On IMDb it holds 7.2 out of 10 from roughly 28,000 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 7 out of 10 from a smaller set of 755 votes. A critics' rating of 8.1 out of 10 from 222 reviews places it above both audience scores.
