Ghost Stories

Professor Philip Goodman is a psychologist and a committed debunker of the paranormal. When he is contacted by Charles Cameron, the television investigator he once admired and who vanished from public life years earlier, Goodman is drawn into three cases that Cameron could not explain: a night watchman haunted by something in a disused asylum, a teenager whose night in the woods ends in terror, and a businessman carrying a burden he cannot name. Goodman sets out to expose each story as a fraud, but the cases begin to press against his own convictions and against his personal history.

Ghost Stories is a British horror drama directed by Andy Nyman and Jeremy Dyson, who also wrote the screenplay. Nyman, better known as an actor and collaborator of illusionists and mentalists, here takes a rare directing credit alongside Dyson, a writer and member of the comedy team behind the stage show that the film adapts. Nyman also plays Goodman in his first leading film role, heading a cast that includes Paul Whitehouse, Alex Lawther and Martin Freeman, with Samuel Bottomley and Deborah Wastell appearing as the young Goodman and his mother. Warp Films, Screen Yorkshire and Catalyst Global Media produced the film, which runs 98 minutes.

Released in early 2018, the film drew a critics' rating of 7.1/10 from 131 reviews, notably higher than the 6.4/10 it holds both on IMDb from around 40,000 votes and on TMDB from roughly 1,300 votes. It took in about 4 million dollars worldwide, a modest return for a production of its scale.
