Short description
Nine years after an alien force took control, Chicago lives under occupation. Surveillance is constant, civil liberties have been stripped away, and an authoritarian administration governs the city. The population has split between those who accommodate the new rulers and those who resist them underground. Among the residents of the Pilsen neighborhood, two brothers are caught on opposite sides: Gabriel works at a plant assembling phone chips whose data feeds the occupiers' archives and deals a little on the black market, while Rafe, presumed dead, has joined the resistance. Detective William Mulligan investigates the rebels' attacks even as he tries to shield his community from reprisals.
Rupert Wyatt directed and co-wrote the film with Erica Beeney, producing alongside David Crockett. It followed The Escapist, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Gambler in his filmography. John Goodman plays Mulligan, with Ashton Sanders as Gabriel, Jonathan Majors as Rafe, Vera Farmiga as Jane Doe, Kevin Dunn and Kevin J. O'Connor rounding out the principal cast.
Made for about 25 million dollars, the film returned roughly 9 million worldwide. On IMDb it holds 6 out of 10 from around 60,000 votes, while on TMDB it sits at 5.7 from about 1,300 votes; a critics' score of 5.2 from 79 reviews puts professional reaction slightly below the audience figures.
What's left behind the scenes
- The original title of the film can be translated as "Captive."
- Towards the end of filming, Machine Gun Kelly suffered a chest injury. It is believed this was due to repeated blows to the chest from the actor playing the police officer.
- The countdown heard at the beginning and end of the film is a recording of the authentic countdown before the launch of the Apollo 11 manned spacecraft in 1969.
- In one of the early shots, showing the Chicago skyline, the roof of a certain hotel was added, which is actually located not in Chicago, but in the North Korean capital, Pyongyang. Construction began in 1987, but it still hasn't been completed. The hotel is listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the tallest building in the world that has not been put into operation.
