Pat Quid is an American truck driver hauling a load of pig carcasses across the Australian outback, with only his dingo for company and a lot of empty highway to fill. He passes the time inventing stories about the drivers he overtakes, and when he picks up a young hitchhiker, Pamela, he shares his suspicions about a strange man in a green van who seems to be following the same route. Radio reports of a serial killer targeting women on the road give his theories weight, and when Pamela disappears he becomes convinced the man in the van has taken her. Setting out to track the driver down, Pat finds the police turning their attention toward him instead.

Richard Franklin directed and produced the film, his third feature after Fantasm and Patrick, working from a screenplay by Everett De Roche. Stacy Keach plays Pat and Jamie Lee Curtis plays Pamela, with Marion Edward, Grant Page and Thaddeus Smith among the supporting cast.

Made for about two million dollars in Australia, the film drew a critics' rating of 7.9 out of 10 from 12 reviews, while audiences are more measured: 6.6 out of 10 on IMDb from around 11,000 votes and 6.5 out of 10 on TMDB from roughly 220 votes. Its modest scale fits a road thriller built on two people and a long stretch of asphalt.
