Jubal Troop, a cowboy found exhausted and without a horse, is taken in at the Wyoming ranch of the genial cattleman Shep Horgan. Jubal's steady nature and hard work soon win Shep's trust, and he is promoted to ranch foreman. The rise stirs resentment in Pinky, the ranch's longtime hand, who had expected the post himself and begins working against the newcomer. Meanwhile, Shep's wife Mae, restless in an isolated life among cattle and horses, turns her attention toward Jubal, who does not welcome it.
The film was directed by Delmer Daves, who wrote the screenplay with Russell S. Hughes; it followed his Demetrius and the Gladiators and preceded 3:10 to Yuma among the twelve features he directed in the period covered here. Glenn Ford plays Jubal, with Ernest Borgnine as Shep, Rod Steiger as Pinky, Valerie French as Mae and Felicia Farr and Basil Ruysdael in supporting roles. Produced by William Fadiman for Columbia Pictures and running 100 minutes, this drama is a loose western reworking of Shakespeare's Othello. On IMDb it holds a 7.1 rating from roughly 4,900 votes, while on TMDB it stands at 6.9 from a much smaller sample of 93 votes.
