Our Souls at Night

Addie Moore and Louis Waters have been neighbours in the small Colorado town of Holt for years without ever growing close. Both are widowed, both live alone in houses their grown children have long since left, and both face the same quiet evenings. One day Addie pays Louis an unexpected visit and asks him to sleep beside her, not out of romance but to make the nights less lonely. The arrangement surprises Louis at first, yet the two begin spending time together and sharing the stories of their lives. As word spreads, the townspeople react with suspicion and resentment, and the bond between Addie and Louis is put under pressure from outside.

The film is directed by Ritesh Batra, his second feature after The Lunchbox and one of two films he directed in 2017. Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber wrote the screenplay with Kent Haruf, adapting his novel. Robert Redford and Jane Fonda play Louis and Addie, appearing together decades after their earlier collaborations, with Matthias Schoenaerts, Iain Armitage, Judy Greer and Phyllis Somerville in supporting roles. Redford also produced alongside Finola Dwyer and Erin Simms.

On IMDb the film holds 6.9 out of 10 from roughly 17,000 votes, while on TMDB it has 6.7 from about 480 votes. A critics' rating of 7.6 from 44 reviews places professional response above the broader audience scores, a gap that suggests reviewers responded more warmly to the film than viewers at large did.
